The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed a civil lawsuit demanding €1.5 million in compensation for damages caused by recent protests in Maputo province, targeting presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the Podemos party supporting him. This follows an earlier €486,000 claim for destruction in the capital city.
The protests, which began after the disputed October 9 elections, have escalated into violent clashes, leaving 67 people dead and over 200 injured, according to an NGO report. Authorities allege that Mondlane and others conspired to attack state facilities, including the presidential residence, and recruited individuals with military experience to disrupt public order.
Mondlane, who contests the election results awarding victory to Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo with 70.67% of the vote, has demanded the release of detained protesters and guarantees of political security ahead of a November 26 post-election meeting convened by President Filipe Nyusi.
Meanwhile, Frelimo held a major rally in Maputo to celebrate its electoral victory, with youth leader Laura Chavana refuting claims that young voters did not support the party. The rally also honored those killed in the protests, which have led to over 1,300 arrests in the past month.
The post-election unrest highlights deep political tensions in Mozambique, as opposition figures continue to challenge the legitimacy of the electoral process.
