Mauritania has concluded a series of activities aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Great Green Wall, a pan-African initiative designed to restore degraded landscapes and combat desertification.
Led by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, the event ran under the theme “Together to Accelerate the Implementation of the Great Green Wall.” It featured discussions, project launches, and training sessions, drawing over 200 participants from Mauritania and beyond, according to the state news agency AMI.
Workshops focused on improving land restoration techniques, strengthening natural resource management, and enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change. A key highlight was the launch of the Green Platform for the Women of the Great Green Wall, which will establish national and regional offices under the leadership of 30 women. The director-general of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Sidna Ould Ahmed Ely, is also a woman.
At the event’s closing, the acting secretary-general of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mohammed Abdullah Salma, reaffirmed Mauritania’s commitment to environmental conservation. He emphasized that President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has made the fight against desertification and climate change a national priority.
