The United Nations (UN) has called for an independent and transparent investigation following the discovery of mass graves in detention centers in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
On Wednesday, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed deep concern over reports of serious human rights violations in official and unofficial facilities operated by the Stability Support Unit, an internal security body under Libya’s Presidential Council.
Originally established in 2021 through a UN-backed process to maintain law and order, the Device is now under investigation following the recovery of dozens of bodies and evidence of torture, reinforcing previous UN reports on abuses in detention centers.
“We call on the Libyan authorities to conduct independent, impartial investigations, preserve all evidence, and provide full access to forensic teams and UN experts,” the OHCHR said in a statement.
