Liberia has launched a national campaign to restore inactive mobile network sites in rural communities, aiming to strengthen digital access and connectivity across underserved regions.
Spearheaded by the Universal Access Fund (UAF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, the project officially commenced on May 5, 2025. A recent assessment conducted in March found that nine out of twelve supported telephony sites in remote areas had been non-operational for up to two years, leaving thousands without basic mobile services.
The phased restoration effort will begin in Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount counties. A joint team of government representatives, telecom technicians, and engineers will lead the repairs.
The initiative forms part of Liberia’s broader strategy to promote digital inclusion and ensure nationwide access to voice and data services. Authorities have pledged to provide ongoing updates as the project moves forward.
