The African Road Cycling Championship is set to take place in Eldoret City from October 9–13, with over 30 countries expected to participate.
This cycling extravaganza marks the first time Kenya will host the event, and Eldoret, also known as the City of Champions, has been chosen as the venue.
Uasin Gishu County, long renowned for its sporting excellence in athletics and volleyball, now has the opportunity to showcase itself as Kenya’s sports capital.
The County Executive for Sports, Lucy Ng’endo, emphasized the significance of this event, stating that it will cement Uasin Gishu’s status as a major hub for sports in Kenya.
“We are fully prepared to host this event as the City of Champions. I believe the championship will inspire our youth to take up cycling as a sport,” Ng’endo said while hosting a delegation from Golazo Sports.
More than 600 participants, primarily cyclists from across the continent, are expected to attend the event.
African cyclists will compete for both the men’s and women’s titles, with each nation fielding a team of eight riders per category.
Last year, at least 22 countries competed in the championship, which was hosted by Golazo Sports and the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) in Ghana.
In preparation for the event, the planning team met with Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Edison Nyale to ensure that everything is well-organized.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Directors Amos Kipruto (Communications), Sila Terikin (Governor’s Press), and Nicholas Busienei (Sports). Later this month, a delegation from CAC will visit the city to assess the preparations, including the designated cycling routes.
Meanwhile, the Kenyan cycling team is currently training in the area, ready to compete on home soil.
