Yasir Arman, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Revolutionary Democratic Current (SPLM-RDC), was taken into custody upon landing in Nairobi. He was later transferred to a hotel while authorities assessed Sudan’s request for his extradition.
The Sudanese government has accused Arman and other leaders of the Coordination of Civilian Democratic Forces (Tagadum) of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023. A letter from Sudan’s Public Prosecution cites alleged violations of both national and international humanitarian laws.
Arman had traveled to Kenya for diplomatic meetings regarding Sudan’s crisis. His detention follows Sudan’s broader push to prosecute political opponents, including former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, whom they accuse of undermining the constitutional order and inciting rebellion.
Tagadum’s Legal and Human Rights Committee has formally challenged Sudan’s request, arguing that the charges are politically motivated. Supporters have called on Kenyan authorities to release Arman and resist efforts by Sudan’s military-led government to use international mechanisms against its opposition.
