Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro, who has shown impressive performance this season, announced that he will step down at the end of the season.
The coach’s contract will expire at the end of the 2024-2025 season, and Riveiro has decided not to renew it. Pirates are currently battling for the championship with Mamelodi Sundowns. The club made this announcement early to ensure there are no disruptions until the end of the season.
The club also stated that, in accordance with the coach’s wishes, they will not make further comments and will express their appreciation at an appropriate time. Club chairman Irvin Khoza made a statement regarding the departure:
“While we would have liked Jose to stay longer with us, we fully respect his decision. We are grateful for everything he has done for the club.”
Riveiro, in his two years and three months in charge, led Pirates to five cup victories, including the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 Nedbank Cups, as well as three consecutive MTN8 titles.
Moreover, the experienced coach successfully led his team to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals this season, remaining unbeaten in the competition. They have a strong chance of reaching the semifinals.
Although Pirates are 15 points behind in the championship race, they still have four games in hand. Riveiro could still guide the team to win both trophies before his departure.
