The Big Deal has reported that Startups in Africa raised $289 million in January 2025.
This figure is nearly 3.5 times higher than January 2024’s total. Additionally, it marks the second-highest investment in a January since 2019.
Last year, investments in the continent were quite weak in the first half. However, the productivity in the second half of the year had provided an outlook for increased investments in 2025. These predictions aligned with reality in the first month of this year. A total of $289 million was raised through deals exceeding $100,000, while in January 2024, the figure was only around $85 million.
More than 90% of the investments made in January 2025 were equity investments. These equity investments, totaling $262 million, were 4.4 times higher than in January 2024.
LemFi raised $53 million to expand into Asia and Europe. PowerGen raised over $50 million to build a scalable platform for distributed renewable energy in Africa. Naked closed a $38 million Series B round to enhance automation and expand its product lineup. Enko raised $24 million to grow its network of schools across the continent.
If the success of these startups continues throughout the year, 2025 could be a breakthrough year for Africa.
