According to the report, Africa is becoming an increasingly important yet vulnerable target in the global cybercrime landscape.
The primary targets of these attacks are key economic sectors such as finance, healthcare, energy, and government.
A recent report by KnowBe4 highlights that due to human-related risks, companies remain highly exposed to threats like phishing.
In addition, sophisticated transnational criminal networks such as “Black Axe,” operating in West Africa, are behind multi-million-dollar fraud schemes, demonstrating just how organized these crimes can be.
INTERPOL notes that the legal and law enforcement frameworks in most African countries are struggling to keep pace with the rapid evolution of cybercrime.
However, the report also points to some positive developments. Among them are efforts by certain countries to strengthen their laws and dismantle international criminal networks.
Moreover, through the implementation of new artificial intelligence policies, East Africa is taking the lead in tackling AI-driven cyber threats across the continent.
