Recent internet disruptions have been occurring in Liberia. The cause of these disruptions is the damage to the country’s main internet source, the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) submarine cable, which was damaged during construction work at PHP Park.
Due to the damage to this cable, strange signal issues have arisen across the country. According to rumors, despite warnings from the Cable Consortium of Liberia (CCL) and telecom operators, these warnings were not heeded.
A massive pile of rocks was dumped right on the cable’s landing spot, causing it to be buried, which led to the internet disruptions.
However, the current administration acted swiftly and arrived at the site to address the issue. The repair ship is expected to arrive by April 23 and begin the heavy-duty work.
Until the repair is completed, Liberians may face internet disruptions for a few days. However, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has granted service providers permission to use backup routes during the repair process to prevent a complete internet shutdown.
This temporary measure may offer some relief.
While options like Starlink are available in Liberia, repairing the ACE cable remains a priority. Such malfunctions highlight just how fragile infrastructure can be.
