In a significant move to bolster military cooperation, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan concluded a four-day visit to Algeria on November 4, focused on enhancing the growing partnership between India and Algeria in trade, education, technology, and defense.
During his visit, General Chauhan and General of Army Said Chanegriha, the Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army, formalized a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation. This agreement, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs, represents a major step forward in military collaboration and lays the foundation for extensive cooperation across various sectors.
Commending the high standards of the military parade held on November 1, General Chauhan acknowledged the significance of the commemorative events marking the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s Glorious Revolution, a critical milestone in the nation’s history.
The CDS also met with senior officers from the People’s National Army and the Director of the Higher War College, reinforcing the shared historical ties that underpin the relationship between India and Algeria. He noted that both countries share common values, fostering a strong bond.
Highlighting the importance of geography in shaping strategic outlooks, General Chauhan stated, “A nation’s core strategic perspective is significantly influenced by its geographical context and historical experiences.” He emphasized India’s commitment to promoting peaceful conflict resolution, asserting, “India consistently advocates for peaceful solutions to global issues.”
He announced the re-establishment of India’s Defense Wing in Algeria and welcomed the reopening of Algeria’s Defense Wing in India as positive developments in this collaborative effort.
Discussing India’s National Security Strategy, General Chauhan expressed India’s ambition to serve as a dependable global partner, or “Vishwa-Bandhu,” amid the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape. He pointed to India’s advancements in technology and a notable agreement in space science as evidence of this commitment.
With the Indian Armed Forces undergoing transformation, General Chauhan expressed eagerness to share experiences with Algeria’s military, emphasizing India’s growing defense production capabilities under the initiatives “Make in India” and “Make for the World.”
Both India and Algeria reaffirm their commitment to principles of self-determination, respect for sovereignty, and mutual support in international forums. As influential regional leaders in South Asia and North Africa, their collaboration is poised to contribute to a balanced and multipolar global order.
This high-level visit follows a recent trip by the President of India to Algeria, underscoring the strong political will on both sides to deepen diplomatic, military, and strategic cooperation.
