In the Unity Cup semi-final, Dessers caught attention once again after scoring a beautiful goal and responded to transfer rumors.
This season, Dessers scored 18 goals and became the top scorer in Scotland, winning the Golden Boot award.
The 30-year-old striker responded to questions about his potential inclusion in the Nigerian national team:
“I don’t make the selections,”
“There is strong competition in the forward line — we really have very good players. All I can do is perform well at my club and score goals.”
“When I get called up to the national team, I try to give my best. I think I did that yesterday and I hope to be in the squad for the next match as well.”
RESPONDED TO TRANSFER RUMORS
Speaking about the transfer speculation, Dessers emphasized that he is currently happy:
“I still have two years left on my contract with Rangers,”
“It’s a great club and I’m happy here. When you score this many goals, it’s normal that other clubs show interest.”
“I saw the reports about Olympiakos, but I don’t know anything concrete.”
“These kinds of rumors are normal, but right now I’m just focused and planning to enjoy my holiday in a few weeks.”
TROPHYLESS SEASON BROUGHT DISAPPOINTMENT
Rangers were knocked out early in the Scottish Cup, lost the Premier Sports Cup final to Celtic on penalties, and were eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League quarter-finals. They finished the league 17 points behind Celtic.
Although Dessers had an impressive season individually, he expressed disappointment about not winning any trophies:
“At a club like Rangers, we should have won a major trophy,”
“Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that, and it was disappointing. But on a personal level, I scored 30 goals and I’m proud of that.”
“Philippe Clement is a good coach. We started the season with him, and then Barry Ferguson came in as interim coach.”
“It’s never easy to take over a team mid-season, but Barry did his best to get everyone focused on the same goal.”
BEATING FENERBAHÇE WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE MEMORY
Dessers expressed his pride in defeating Fenerbahçe in the Europa League:
“We had some positive moments in the Europa League — we earned two great wins against a strong Fenerbahçe side coached by José Mourinho. So there were things to be grateful for as well.”
