A recent drone strike and heavy clashes on November 5, 2024, in Ethiopia’s West Gojjam Zone have left numerous fatalities, including Fano militia members and civilians, according to local reports. The attack, which occurred in Durbete town within the Achefer district, reportedly involved aerial strikes targeting areas where Fano fighters were undergoing training.
One resident described intense fighting and airstrikes that resulted in 16 Fano fighters killed. He also noted that bombs dropped by drones struck civilian areas, leading to additional casualties among residents. Another witness confirmed the deadly drone strike, stating, “More than 30 people have been killed, and fear grips the community as violence continues.”
The Amhara region has seen escalating conflict between government forces and Fano militias, particularly after an October 2024 statement by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and the Amhara regional government pledging to continue “law enforcement operations” until peace is restored.
Local reports indicate that fighting has spread across both rural and urban centers in East and West Gojjam zones, with confrontations intensifying in towns such as Finote Selam, Bure, and Jiga. The ongoing violence has disrupted daily life, leaving communities anxious and on high alert amid fears of further attacks.
