Osaze Urhoghide, who plays for MLS side FC Dallas, was eligible to represent three different national teams but has chosen to commit to Nigeria.
Born in Rotterdam to Nigerian parents, Urhoghide spent his early childhood in the Netherlands before moving to England at the age of five. Because of this background, he was eligible to play for the Netherlands, England, or Nigeria.
“I am ready to play for my fatherland, Nigeria,” he said.
“I’ve informed my family of my decision to represent the Super Eagles. I am also using this opportunity to officially let the Nigeria Football Federation know that I am ready.”
The 24-year-old defender, who joined FC Dallas for a record transfer fee, has been a standout performer throughout the season thanks to his strong physical presence, versatility, and effectiveness in counter-attacking situations.
Although Nigeria has many top-level stars, the national team has been struggling defensively.
With captain William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, and Leon Balogun nearing the end of their careers and Semi Ajayi frequently dealing with injuries, Urhoghide’s decision could be a major boost for the Super Eagles.
Having played in top leagues such as England, Scotland, Belgium, and France, the young defender is well aware of how to handle pressure in big matches.
His inclusion could help revive Nigeria’s fading World Cup hopes.
