World Leaders Meet at Abuja Summit to Strengthen Submarine Cable Resilience.
Global leaders committed to strengthening submarine cable resilience through innovation, cooperation, and protection measures.
They announced plans to collaborate for reliable connectivity worldwide.
At the International Submarine Cable Resilience Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria, industry executives, governments, and international organizations gathered. Approximately 500 submarine telecommunications cables span over 1.7 million kilometers worldwide.
Each year, about 150-200 faults are reported on these cables. Faults lead to disruptions in communication, which negatively affect sectors such as the economy, access to information, public services, and daily life.
During the summit, solutions were discussed to protect this essential infrastructure. Proposed solutions include strengthening cable protection through risk mitigation, facilitating timely deployment and repair, and promoting diverse routes and landing points to enhance resilience and continuity. These measures aim to reduce the frequency of disruptions.
The declaration also emphasized the importance of advancing sustainable approaches, facilitating capacity building, and promoting technological innovation to address global challenges and ensure long-term connectivity.
