Yesterday, Ghana held its first-ever Ghana Space Conference in Accra.
The conference, themed “Harnessing Space Technology for Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth in Ghana and Beyond,” will continue for three days.
The event brought together government officials, scientists, industry leaders, international organizations, entrepreneurs, and students from across the continent.
The conference is organized under the auspices of the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI), Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), University of Ghana, All Nations University, Spacehubs Africa, and Agbedus Consult.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, EPA CEO Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse highlighted that space applications can address critical challenges in sectors such as climate resilience, environmental management, agriculture, disaster response, urban planning, and trade efficiency, emphasizing that such research is not a luxury but a necessity.
Dr. Joseph Tandoh, Director of the Ghana Space Science Institute, supported these views and stressed the urgent need to establish a Ghana Space Agency.
Investments in Ghana’s space policy are expected to have both direct and indirect impacts on the country’s sustainable development plans.
