Ghana has successfully evacuated its first group of citizens from Iran to Türkiye in response to the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday, June 20, 2025.
Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the evacuation was the beginning of broader efforts to ensure the safety of Ghanaians in the conflict-affected areas, local news website YEN reported. He added that preparations were underway to evacuate Ghanaians currently residing in Israel.
“These evacuations are part of our government’s emergency response strategy and the safety of Ghanaians abroad is our top priority,” Ablakwa said.
Ghana Urges Immediate Ceasefire and Peaceful Resolution
The Minister announced that Ghana had held separate meetings with the Israeli and Iranian ambassadors in Accra to communicate evacuation plans and obtain the necessary transit permits. He reiterated Ghana’s long-standing policy of neutrality and called for an immediate ceasefire and peaceful resolution between the two Middle Eastern countries.
Ablakwa stressed Ghana’s right to adopt independent foreign policy positions based on national interests, the 1992 Constitution and principles such as pacifism, multilateralism, adherence to international law and respect for the UN Charter.
“These values will continue to guide Ghana’s international engagements, especially as the country currently serves on the UN Human Rights Council and chairs the board of directors of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” he said.
