Djibouti Telecom has announced its decision to extend the Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1) subsea cable.
With this expansion, the cable line will extend along Africa’s east coast, adding new landing points in Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and South Africa.
The company stated that under this extension, the line will run from Mombasa to Mtunzini in South Africa, covering a distance of 3,200 km to 3,500 km, with additional branches planned for Tanzania, Mozambique, and Madagascar.
Work is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the project expected to be ready for service in 2028.
Once completed, the project will promote the expansion of cloud, content, and digital services while strengthening regional integration. It will also increase capacity for operators and businesses and provide greater route diversity.
Similar subsea cable projects surrounding the continent have become increasingly active in recent times. In August 2025, Telecom Egypt and telecom service provider NaiTel completed the laying of the Coral Bridge subsea cable, connecting Egypt and Jordan.
In July 2025, Algérie Télécom and Sparkle signed a memorandum of understanding, while Telecom Egypt and SubCom announced the completion of dual landings of the SEA-ME-WE-6 subsea cable system on both of Egypt’s coasts.
