The Lagos administration and Origin Tech Group, in their jointly managed food hub project, aim to enhance food security and infrastructure development.
This food hub is projected to become the largest on the continent and the second-largest logistics center globally. The facility, expected to be established in Lagos, will cover an area of 220 hectares.
It will improve accessibility, stabilize market prices, and reduce post-harvest losses. As a result, Lagos’ food supply and food security will be significantly bolstered.
The project includes a 14,000-capacity abattoir on a 1,000-hectare area, a dry storage facility for agricultural products spanning the size of 11 football fields, and a jetty to facilitate water transportation across Lagos.
Additionally, market centers will be located in Agege, Ajah, Ikorodu, and Oregun, ensuring food distribution from these hubs.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed before the second anniversary of the Lagos Governor’s second term. Once operational, the facility is expected to lead to a 50% reduction in food prices.
Moreover, the project will create job opportunities and position the state as a leader in sustainable food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This initiative will serve as a benchmark for food security and infrastructure development for other regions in Sub-Saharan Africa. By doing so, it will contribute to sustainable economic growth and development in the region.
