FIFA has deducted points from South Africa.
In the 2026 World Cup Africa Qualifiers, Group C, Teboho Mokoena played in the match against Lesotho despite being suspended.
Having received two yellow cards in previous matches, Mokoena was not supposed to play in that game.
Following this action by South Africa, debates continued, and an appeal was made to FIFA. As a result, South Africa had 3 points and 3 goals deducted. Additionally, they were fined 10,000 CHF by FIFA.
South Africa was in a very advantageous position in the World Cup qualifiers. However, after this decision, they are now level on points with Benin. Nigeria, meanwhile, is just 3 points behind these two teams.
Although South Africa’s remaining matches are relatively easier, any potential loss of points could make it difficult for them to maintain the lead. In short, the race for the top spot in Group C has become much tighter following this decision.
