Ethiopian athlete Shewarge Alene has passed away. The runner, who was only 30 years old, was confirmed dead by the organisers of the Stockholm Marathon.
Throughout her career, she competed in 27 marathons and secured 12 victories, with her most recent win coming in Stockholm.
A statement on the marathon’s official Instagram account read:
“We are deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of the 2025 adidas Stockholm Marathon.”
“Shewarge Alene fell ill during a training session and was taken to hospital, but sadly, her life could not be saved. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”
Alene achieved her personal best in Cape Town, South Africa, recording a time of 2:27:26 in the marathon.
