Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Adem Mohammed, has expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the Ankara Declaration, describing it as a vital step in easing tensions with Somalia and commending Türkiye’s role as mediator in the Horn of Africa.
Speaking in Ankara, Ambassador Mohammed highlighted Türkiye’s commitment to peace, conflict resolution, and regional stability, noting that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s mediation has helped reduce hostilities and promote dialogue. “The Ankara Declaration has strengthened mutual understanding and laid the groundwork for a long-term peace initiative,” he said.
Relations between Ethiopia and Somalia deteriorated after Ethiopia’s January 2024 deal with Somaliland, granting sea access via Berbera port while recognizing the territory’s independence — a move that provoked a sharp crisis with Mogadishu. Türkiye intervened diplomatically, leading to the Ankara Declaration in December 2024, aimed at fostering reconciliation between the two neighbors that have clashed in the past.
Ambassador Mohammed underlined that although a second round of technical talks is yet to be scheduled, discussions at both leadership and ministerial levels remain constructive. The recent appointment of Ethiopia’s ambassador to Mogadishu was cited as a positive sign. “We believe the Ankara Declaration is operational and guiding dialogue forward,” he added.
Looking ahead, the envoy said improved relations between Ethiopia and Somalia are not only possible but necessary: “We have no other choice.”
He also highlighted the upcoming Second Africa Climate Summit, to be held September 8–10 in Addis Ababa with the African Union, emphasizing its focus on advancing African-led solutions to the climate crisis. He noted Türkiye’s strategic partnership with Africa covers humanitarian aid, agriculture, environmental protection, infrastructure, technology, and peacebuilding.
“The summit will demonstrate Africa’s unity in addressing climate challenges while offering opportunities to strengthen cooperation with partners like Türkiye,” Mohammed said.
