Yohannes Alemayehu, a leader and spokesperson of Gojjam Fano, was killed in action during a battle near Washera on the night of January 20-21. The Gojjam Fano group confirmed his death through a social media update, marking a significant loss for the group.
Alemayehu served as the chairperson of the Amhara Fano Second Teferra Division and was known for his speeches to Media. He had been involved in several battles in Gojjam, including in Mota, Adet, Milachber, Feres Bet, and Quarit.
Born in the Gonje Kolela district of Gojjam, Alemayehu was a student at Bahir Dar University. During his university years, he led the Amhara Students Association.
Recent reports indicate continued intense fighting in the Amhara region, including near Bahir Dar. Since August 2023, over 200,000 Ethiopian Defense Force troops have been deployed to the region, where the conflict is still ongoing. Fano is reportedly weekend by air strikes by drones.
There have also been reports of some Fano members surrendering to the government forces.
