With Esperance’s elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup, only one African team remains in the tournament.
In a match played earlier this morning, the Tunisian side suffered a heavy defeat against Chelsea and bid farewell to the competition.
The first half was going relatively well for Esperance, but things quickly turned around in stoppage time.
Chelsea took the lead after a free-kick from Enzo Fernandez was headed into the net by defender Tosin Adarabioyo.
Just two minutes later, Liam Delap — Chelsea’s new signing — scored his first goal for the club to double the lead. In the dying moments of the match, Tyrique George added a third, sealing a 3-0 win for the English side.
As a result of this defeat, Esperance were eliminated from the tournament. Earlier in the competition, both Al Ahly and Wydad had also been knocked out.
Now, the only African team left in the competition is Mamelodi Sundowns — the South African champions and finalists of this year’s CAF Champions League.
They are set to face Fluminense FC today, and a victory would see them qualify for the last 16.
