Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, pledged on Tuesday to defeat the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and bring an end to the conflict that has plagued Sudan since April 2023.
During his visit to Asmara, where he held discussions with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, Burhan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the war and achieving peace. He accused the RSF of committing widespread atrocities against civilians and undermining the Sudanese state.
“The armed forces, along with other regular and mobilized units, are fully determined to eliminate and defeat these militias,” stated Burhan in a Sovereign Council announcement.
Burhan expressed gratitude to Eritrea for its support during the crisis and for providing refuge to Sudanese citizens displaced by the ongoing violence. Afwerki reiterated Eritrea’s solidarity with the Sudanese people, emphasizing the strong ties and mutual cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting also included discussions on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing shared regional challenges. The conflict in Sudan has displaced millions, exacerbating a dire humanitarian situation across the country.
