Egypt has expressed strong support for the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, which was announced on May 10, 2025, following a series of intense clashes in the Kashmir region. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, engaged in separate phone calls on Sunday with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, and Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the development.
During these calls, Minister Abdelatty commended both India and Pakistan for their decision to halt hostilities, emphasizing the importance of the ceasefire in contributing to de-escalation and enhancing stability in South Asia. He expressed Egypt’s unwavering support for this crucial step, underscoring its potential to foster mutual trust and create conditions for lasting peace.
Abdelatty stressed that the ceasefire agreement provides a vital foundation for future cooperation between the two nations, offering an opportunity to address shared aspirations for peace, development, and security. He also noted that maintaining the ceasefire would help in promoting regional stability, a key priority for Egypt’s foreign policy.
Both Jaishankar and Dar expressed their gratitude for Egypt’s constructive diplomatic stance and its ongoing efforts to promote calm in the region. They reiterated the importance of Egypt’s involvement in regional peacebuilding and affirmed the strength of Egypt’s relationships with both India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire comes after four days of heavy fighting, the worst the region has seen in decades, following a deadly attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them Indian tourists. The violence, which had threatened to spiral into a larger conflict, was halted after high-level military talks between the two sides. The ceasefire officially took effect at 5 PM local time (1130 GMT), with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirming the agreement on social media.
For Egypt, the announcement reinforces its diplomatic role as a key player in regional peace efforts. As tensions persist in South Asia, Egypt continues to advocate for dialogue and de-escalation, reaffirming its position as a stabilizing force in the region. The country’s proactive engagement in the India-Pakistan situation reflects its broader foreign policy strategy, which prioritizes peace, cooperation, and stability across Africa and beyond.
As Egypt’s diplomatic influence continues to grow, the country’s involvement in the South Asian conflict highlights its commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means and fostering constructive international relationships.
