Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held urgent consultations on Sunday with his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Bahrain, amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. The talks, conducted via separate phone calls, were part of Egypt’s broader diplomatic push to address the rapidly escalating situation, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his discussions with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani, Abdelatty focused on the consequences of the recent military confrontations. The ministers expressed deep concern that continued hostilities could push the already volatile region toward a wider conflict.
All four diplomats underscored the urgent need for restraint and called on all parties to avoid further escalation. They emphasized the importance of resolving differences through diplomacy and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving regional stability. The officials also agreed to intensify coordination efforts aimed at finding a political resolution to the unfolding crisis.
The consultations followed a dramatic spike in violence. On Friday, Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian sites reportedly linked to military and nuclear infrastructure. Unconfirmed reports suggest the strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple senior military officials, nine nuclear scientists, and dozens of civilians, marking one of Israel’s most significant attacks on Iranian territory in recent years.
In response, Iran carried out a large-scale counteroffensive on Saturday, deploying missiles and drones to strike several locations across Israel. The Iranian government has since issued warnings of further retaliation should Israeli operations continue.
The rapid escalation has drawn widespread concern from the international community, with many governments urging both sides to de-escalate. Egypt’s diplomatic engagement reflects its intention to play a constructive role by working closely with key Arab partners to prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
As the conflict unfolds, regional leaders remain alarmed over the potential impact on geopolitical stability, energy markets, and vital trade corridors. Egypt’s outreach underscores the critical need for diplomacy at a moment when the threat of a broader regional war looms large.
