Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation on Sunday to address critical developments in Syria and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two top diplomats emphasized the importance of international cooperation to support Syria during its current transitional period, with a focus on respecting the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. In their discussion, both ministers highlighted the need for coordinated efforts among global and regional stakeholders to assist Syria in overcoming the challenges of this delicate phase.
Abdelatty and Lavrov agreed that any assistance extended to Syria must prioritize the well-being of all its citizens, ensuring that support benefits all segments of society. They underscored the importance of fostering a Syrian-led political process aimed at restoring national stability and preserving the security and future of the Syrian people. This process, they stressed, must remain free from external interference, with the Syrian people at the helm of their country’s political and economic recovery.
Turning to the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a permanent ceasefire in the region. He emphasized the urgency of ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been enduring severe shortages amid the ongoing siege. Egypt has been at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and facilitate aid access, underscoring its role as a key regional player in addressing the crisis.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address these pressing issues, with an emphasis on peaceful resolutions that prioritize the stability and well-being of the affected populations in both Syria and Gaza.
