The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) announced that the women’s league could be suspended following allegations of homosexual activity in women’s football. In Ethiopia, where over 98% of the population is Christian or Muslim, such acts are considered a criminal offense.
The country’s Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, the Sports Commission, the Ethiopian Women Football Coaches Professional Association, and the Ethiopian Football Fans Association held a high-level meeting to address the issue. Following the meeting, the Federation stated that individuals whose involvement is proven would be punished:
“We will take necessary measures against this disgusting practice.”
It was also stated that those implicated would be sent for rehabilitation.
Reporters in Addis Ababa noted that the police and INSA (Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Agency) have been authorized to conduct investigations anywhere, including club facilities. Club owners, coaches, and other directly involved parties will be investigated as part of this process.
Players whose guilt is confirmed are expected to be banned from playing in any club in the country.
