Kenya’s National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) has been linked with Tanzania’s national fiber network, significantly strengthening regional connectivity across East Africa.
This initiative, a collaborative effort between Kenya’s ICT Authority and Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL), was coordinated through the partnership of both countries’ ICT Ministries.
Following the successful completion of the project, the aim is to increase access to affordable internet, promote digital trade, and foster inclusive economic growth.
It was reported that the fiber optic cable spans more than 130 kilometers.
The project is considered a significant step toward addressing one of Africa’s biggest challenges — the digital divide, where access to digital technologies is not equally distributed across society.
John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary at Kenya’s Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy, emphasized that the new infrastructure presents major opportunities for entrepreneurs, SMEs, and the youth.
With enhanced connectivity, new opportunities for cross-border collaboration, digital entrepreneurship, and the export of digital services are expected to emerge on both regional and global levels.
