The Democratic Republic of the Congo, having defeated Cameroon and Nigeria in succession during the World Cup play-off journey, has been automatically placed in one of the two finals of the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
In this small competition, which will be held in Mexico and will determine the last teams to qualify for the World Cup, DR Congo will secure a World Cup ticket if they can win just one more match.
Alongside DR Congo, the mini-tournament will feature two CONCACAF teams, one CONMEBOL team, one OFC team, and one AFC team. The tournament will be played in two separate brackets. According to the FIFA Men’s Rankings, two seeded teams will be placed directly into the finals.
The remaining four teams will contest the semi-finals in each bracket, with the winners advancing to the finals. After the two finals, the two victorious teams will qualify for the World Cup.
DR Congo has been automatically placed in the final of the first bracket, and their potential opponents are Jamaica, Bolivia, Suriname, or New Caledonia. The confirmed participant in the second bracket’s final is Iraq.
If both Iraq and DR Congo manage to win one more match, they will officially secure their place at the World Cup.
