The United States has reportedly reiterated its support for Somalia in the war against Al-Shabaab, a group that has plagued the country for almost 20 years and caused suffering to both army soldiers and innocent civilians, according to official media.
The US Africa Command has been directly involved in helping the Somali National Army (SNA) take on Al-Shabaab for the past 20 years. In the process, the SNA has secured numerous vital positions and severed the insurgents’ bodies.
Colonel David Haskell, the US Army’s Special Operations Commander, declared that the US will not back down from its fight against Al-Shabaab and added that the group’s power is decreasing as a result of friendly allies’ and local forces’ strategic collaboration.
“US government officials expressed strong support for the operation, reaffirming their commitment to assist Somali forces in their efforts to eliminate Khawarij groups,” the state media adds.
Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin headed the esteemed mission. While touring the Middle Shabelle region, Colonel David Haskell, the US Army’s Special Operations Commander, and the commander of the Somali National Army spoke.
The delegation also asked security forces to remain united, saying, “This visit emphasizes the ongoing international cooperation aimed at enhancing security and stability in Somalia.”
The delegation held strategic talks about how to drive out Khawarij insurgents from the area with local army officers. According to official media, Major General Muhuddin stressed the value of readiness and cooperation with local people in the battle against terrorism.
The elite Danab commandos, who are vital in the battle against Al-Shabaab insurgents, receive their training from the United States Army. Although the army has been able to free a number of key localities, the organization still holds significant control over rural parts in the country’s middle and southern regions.
