Chad is set to install its first-ever Senate on March 7, following a decree issued by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. The move comes after the Constitutional Council confirmed the final results of the senatorial elections and the appointment of 23 additional senators under the presidential quota.
The ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) secured a dominant 43 seats, while the opposition won only three. The new Senate will consist of 69 members, including 46 elected representatives and 23 presidential appointees.
A separate decree signed on March 5 has designated the Palace of Arts and Culture in N’Djamena as the official seat of the Senate. This marks a significant milestone in Chad’s political landscape as the country establishes its upper legislative chamber for the first time.
