The government of Chad has announced a $1.5 billion program to develop its digital strategy under the “Chad Connection 2030” plan.
The ambitious program aims to make Chad one of the leading digital economies in Africa by providing quality internet access to the majority of its citizens.
The national fiber backbone will be strengthened with fiber loops completed in urban and rural areas, and satellite solutions will be deployed to extend coverage to remote and isolated regions.
PRIVATIZATION TO BOOST COMPETITION
To reduce internet access costs and increase competition, the government will promote the privatization of its state-owned telecom provider Sotel and create space for a third private operator to enter the market.
This is expected to lower consumer prices and improve service quality in the long term.
The government also aims to digitize, interconnect, and strengthen public and semi-public services, allowing citizens to access comprehensive e-government services.
Digital payments for basic services will be accelerated and expanded nationwide, enhancing inclusion and financial transparency.
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS ONGOING
Chad has also launched infrastructure projects to achieve these goals.
Plans include completing a 509-kilometer international fiber connection from N’Djamena to the Niger border, opening new internet access points to Libya and Egypt, and deploying satellite links to underserved rural areas.
If successfully implemented, these projects will mark a significant step forward for Chad’s digital and economic future.
