The Central African Republic (CAR) has taken a significant step toward advancing human rights with the adoption of a law to protect human rights defenders, approved by the National Assembly on December 27, 2024.
Yao Agbetse, the Independent Expert on the human rights situation in CAR, hailed the legislation as a historic milestone that strengthens the recognition and safety of individuals and organizations advocating for fundamental rights.
Key Features of the Law:
- Enhanced Protections: Provides security mechanisms, legal support, and safeguards against reprisals for human rights defenders.
- Promotion of Civic Freedoms: Ensures the protection of freedoms such as expression, association, assembly, and peaceful protest.
- Support for Civil Society: Recognizes the vital role of civil society organizations in implementing national development and human rights policies.
“This law is pivotal for democratic progress and the preservation of civic space in CAR,” Agbetse said. “It is a victory for justice and equality, offering defenders the protection they need to continue their work without fear.”
Agbetse called on CAR authorities, the National Commission for Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and international partners to support the law’s implementation and ensure sustained protection for human rights defenders.
He emphasized that safeguarding these defenders is essential for fostering peace, justice, and democracy in the country. “Peace can only flourish when human rights are respected,” Agbetse said.
