Kenyan authorities have released new details into the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were, who was gunned down on April 30 in Nairobi. Surveillance footage obtained by homicide detectives has shed light on the final minutes before the fatal attack and the possible identity of the gunman.
The legislator was killed near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road after a motorcycle-borne assailant shot him at close range. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that Were was struck by four bullets—one shattered his car window while others hit his chest and arm.
According to police investigations, the MP left Parliament Buildings around 7:00 p.m. accompanied by his driver and bodyguard. The trio drove toward Wabera Street via City Hall Way. There, the bodyguard briefly exited the car to deposit Ksh 20,000 at a mobile money outlet on behalf of the lawmaker.
CCTV footage from the area captured a hooded individual loitering nearby, appearing to monitor the movements of the MP’s vehicle. Detectives believe the man began tailing the car from this point.
To avoid traffic on Kenyatta Avenue, the driver diverted the vehicle through Ralph Bunche Road, continuing onto Argwings Kodhek Road before coming to a stop in traffic on Valley Road. Additional footage shows the same suspect, now on a motorcycle, following the vehicle to the new location.
Moments later, the attacker dismounted, approached the car, and opened fire. The MP’s bodyguard attempted to pursue the gunman but was unsuccessful. Were was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators say the suspect seen in the footage remains at large but is now the focus of a nationwide manhunt.
The killing of MP Were has sparked outrage and concern across Kenya, with pressure mounting on security agencies to deliver answers. Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
