The first round of matches in the CAF Champions League, Africa’s premier inter-club competition, has been completed.
In Group A, last year’s champions FC Pyramids defeated Rivers United FC 3-0, with Ahmed Atef scoring all three goals. Meanwhile, last season’s CAF Confederation Cup champions RS Berkane claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Zambian side Power Dynamos.
In Group B, Egyptian giants Al Ahly cruised to a 4-1 win against Algerian club JS Kabylie. In the group’s other match, Young Africans secured a 1-0 victory against AS FAR.
In Group C, South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, who have won the league for eight consecutive years, defeated Saint-Eloi Lupopo 3-1. Sudanese side Al-Hilal managed a 2-1 win over MC Alger, despite being reduced to 10 men.
Finally, in Group D, Petro de Luanda earned a 1-0 away victory against Simba, while the match between Espérance and Stade Malien ended in a goalless draw.
There are five more matchweeks left in the group stage, after which the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
