Under the esteemed patronage of His Excellency Gen Maj. Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic of Burundi, the inaugural Burundi Tourism Week 2024 (BTW2024) kicked off on December 11, 2024. The event, organized by the Burundi Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, runs until December 14 and aims to position the country as a premier destination for both tourism and investment.
Taking place at the serene Zion Beach along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the event brings together industry leaders, investors, and tourism professionals to discuss sustainable tourism development and showcase Burundi’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and growing tourism sector.
The African Tourism Board (ATB) is playing a central role in the event, with ATB Executive Chairman Mr. Cuthbert Ncube attending as the Guest of Honor. In his remarks, Ncube emphasized that Burundi has the potential to become a key travel destination, citing the country’s rich culture, diverse landscapes, and wildlife as major attractions.
“Burundi is not just a place for relaxation, but a promising land for investment, especially within the tourism sector,” Ncube said. “This week will underscore the country’s efforts to revitalize tourism and attract global investment.”
The event’s theme, “Development of Domestic Tourism,” reflects Burundi’s commitment to turning tourism into a major pillar of its economic growth. The government’s investment in infrastructure and tourism promotion aims to elevate the country’s profile on the global tourism map.
Burundi, often referred to as the “Heart of Africa,” is rapidly becoming recognized for its natural wonders, including Lake Tanganyika—one of the world’s deepest and oldest lakes—and the lush Kibira National Park, home to an array of wildlife. The country’s tourism sector is on the rise, with 2022 seeing a notable increase in international visitors, especially from neighboring countries like Tanzania and Rwanda.
Throughout the week, attendees will engage in discussions on investment opportunities, explore Burundi’s tourism offerings, and participate in cultural performances. The event will also provide a platform for networking, allowing investors to explore various business opportunities within the burgeoning tourism industry.
As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Burundi Tourism Week highlights the resilience of the tourism sector and its potential to drive economic recovery. Burundi’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism and develop its resources are seen as crucial steps towards establishing the country as a significant player in Africa’s tourism industry.
With its focus on both tourism and investment, the inaugural Burundi Tourism Week 2024 is poised to leave a lasting impact, contributing to the region’s long-term growth and attracting international attention to the nation’s emerging tourism landscape.
