Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, passed away 11 days after a bout held in Ghana’s capital, Accra.
The middleweight boxer was 32 years old at the time of his death. Following this incident, all boxing activities in Ghana were suspended.
Although the exact cause of death is not yet known, it is believed that he may have suffered internal bleeding as a result of blows sustained during the fight.
In a statement, the National Sports Authority described the suspension of boxing as “a necessary step to protect lives, uphold the integrity of the sport, and ensure its future.”
Earlier this year, in March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju collapsed during a fight against Ghanaian opponent Jon Mbanugu in Accra and died shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Although boxing is a very popular sport in Ghana, these incidents once again highlight the value placed on athletes and the importance of safety measures.
