In a statement released from Addis Ababa, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended Hassan’s win and urged all Tanzanians to maintain peace and unity after a tense election period marked by protests and casualties.
Youssouf expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during post-election unrest, emphasizing the importance of protecting fundamental freedoms, including peaceful assembly and expression, in accordance with Tanzania’s laws and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
He also reaffirmed the AU’s readiness to work with the Tanzanian government and people to strengthen national cohesion, democracy, and human rights.
President Hassan’s re-election marks a historic continuation of her leadership as Tanzania’s first female head of state, a role she first assumed in March 2021 after the passing of President John Magufuli.
