At least eight civilians have been killed, and 53 others wounded in a series of artillery shelling attacks carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, and the western city of El Fasher in North Darfur.
The Ministry of Health in Khartoum confirmed that on Saturday, the RSF launched multiple artillery strikes targeting civilian areas in the Karari locality of Omdurman, located north of Khartoum, and the Sharq Alneel (East Nile) locality, situated to the east of the capital. The attacks resulted in the deaths of four civilians and left 43 others with injuries. The wounded individuals were transferred to Al-No and Abu Sied Hospitals in Omdurman, as well as El Ban Jadid Hospital in Sharq Alneel for urgent medical treatment.
In El Fasher, the 6th Infantry Division of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported that four civilians were killed and ten others injured during an RSF shelling on residential neighborhoods on Friday. The attack has heightened concerns about the safety of civilians in the region, which has already been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict.
Despite the escalating violence, the RSF has not responded to the reports or issued a statement regarding these incidents.
The conflict between Sudan’s armed forces and the RSF has been intensifying since mid-April 2023, with clashes raging in major cities, including El Fasher, since early May 2024. The ongoing conflict has led to at least 29,683 deaths and displaced over 14 million people, either within Sudan’s borders or across neighboring countries, according to the latest estimates from international agencies.
As the violence continues, Sudanese civilians remain at the mercy of the relentless fighting, with humanitarian organizations struggling to provide adequate support amidst widespread displacement and destruction.
