At least 14 people were killed and several others were injured when Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched artillery strikes on a refugee camp in North Darfur, a local aid agency reported on Wednesday.
The attack targeted the Abu Shouk camp in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, according to the Abu Shouk Emergency Committee. RSF did not respond to the allegations.
El-Fasher has become a point of conflict in recent weeks, with heavy fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese army since May 2024. The city is a key humanitarian access point for the wider Darfur region, raising concerns from international observers about the escalating violence.
Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since April 2023, when a deadly power struggle erupted between the army and the RSF. According to UN and local reports, the conflict has devastated the country, killing at least 20,000 people and displacing more than 15 million people. However, some US-based researchers estimate the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as the conflict shows no signs of resolving.
