Como Calcio’s right-winger, Assane Diao, has chosen to represent Senegal at the international level instead of Spain.
He has been called up to the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualification matches against Sudan and Togo, which will take place on March 22 and March 25. These two matches could mark the first time the 19-year-old wears the national team jersey.
Diao previously represented Spain at the U18, U19, and U21 levels while playing for Real Betis. However, for his senior international career, he has opted to play for Senegal.
According to FIFA regulations, players are allowed to change their national team at the senior level if they meet certain criteria. These include not having played more than three international matches before the age of 21, not having participated in the final stages of a major tournament, and not having played for any national team for at least three years.
If Diao plays in three more international matches within the next 18 months, he will secure his eligibility to represent Senegal permanently.
The young talent has been in impressive form this season, contributing five goals in ten Serie A appearances.
