The Angolan government has announced plans to initiate the long-anticipated privatisation of state-owned TAAG Angola Airlines in 2026, as it seeks an international strategic partner to reduce operating costs and enhance the airline’s global competitiveness. Transport Minister Ricardo Viegas d’Abreu confirmed the timeline, emphasizing that restructuring efforts would continue in 2025 to prepare the airline for privatisation.
TAAG is currently undergoing a five-year strategic growth plan aimed at strengthening its operations and financial performance. Minister d’Abreu stated that the stake to be offered to a strategic partner is yet to be determined but will be substantial enough to secure investment for sustainable business growth.
TAAG recorded its first profit in years in 2022, amounting to AOA460 million (USD499,000). However, the airline posted an operating loss of AOA90.1 billion (USD97.7 million) in 2023, primarily due to rising costs. These included AOA138.1 billion (USD149.5 million) for third-party services and AOA16 billion (USD17.3 million) for aircraft leases, alongside increased fuel prices and passenger-related expenses.
Fleet Modernisation and Expansion
Fleet modernisation is central to TAAG’s growth strategy. The airline is expecting its first Boeing B787-9 in February 2025, with a second delivery by May 2025. Additionally, its first B787-10 is scheduled to arrive in February 2025. These aircraft are part of a sale/lease-back deal for four B787s signed at the Dubai Air Show in October 2023. The new models will initially complement TAAG’s existing fleet of B777s, which includes three B777-200ERs and five B777-300ERs.
Regional operations are also being upgraded with the addition of Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The first A220 began service in November 2024, with two more expected in early 2025. TAAG plans to acquire 15 A220s to replace its ageing B737-700s. However, deliveries have faced delays due to Airbus production challenges, engine supply issues, and training requirements for pilots and mechanics.
Cargo Expansion and New Hub Operations
TAAG is expanding its cargo operations with plans to acquire a second B737-800(BCF) and possibly a widebody freighter. Currently, the airline operates one B737-800(BCF) under a dry lease from BBAM.
The airline has also transitioned to its new hub at Luanda Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, commencing operations in November 2023. The complete move from the old Luanda 4 De Fevereiro Airport is set to conclude by March 2025.
TAAG aims to launch its first U.S. route, connecting Luanda to Houston Intercontinental, by 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
The privatisation and ongoing modernisation efforts underscore Angola’s commitment to revitalizing its national carrier, positioning TAAG for long-term growth and competitiveness in the global aviation market.
