Salma Malika Haddadi, Algeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), has been elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. She won with 33 votes, securing a two-thirds majority in a competitive election. The Moroccan candidate was eliminated in the sixth and final round, while the Libyan and Egyptian candidates withdrew in the first and third rounds, respectively. Haddadi replaces Rwandan diplomat Monique Nsanzabaganwa, whose term has ended.
At 47, Haddadi brings over 20 years of diplomatic experience to the role. Her career has focused on promoting peace, unity, and development across Africa. Her election highlights her strong leadership and deep understanding of the continent’s challenges.
Haddadi has held several key positions that have prepared her for this role. Most recently, she served as Algeria’s Director-General for African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from March 2023 to April 2024. Before that, she was Algeria’s Extraordinary Ambassador and Commissioner to Kenya and South Sudan between 2019 and 2023, where she strengthened regional ties. From 2015 to 2019, she worked as Ministerial Advisor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Algerian Embassy in Ethiopia and the African Union, gaining valuable insights into the AU’s operations. Earlier, from 2013 to 2015, she was Deputy Director for Social Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on social progress and security.
Her election campaign officially began on December 17, 2024, launched by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, in Addis Ababa. Colleagues and peers widely supported her candidacy, praising her as a skilled negotiator and a unifying figure. Throughout her career, Haddadi has shown exceptional ability to build consensus and foster collaboration among AU member states, regional organizations, and international partners.
As Deputy Chairperson, Haddadi will play a central role in shaping the AU’s policies, particularly in governance, security, and sustainable development. Her experience in high-level negotiations and her deep understanding of the AU’s challenges make her well-suited to advance the organization’s goals. In her acceptance speech, she said, “I am deeply honored to serve in this role and will work tirelessly to strengthen the African Union’s efforts in building a more integrated, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.”
Haddadi’s election comes at a critical time for Africa, as the continent faces challenges like climate change, political instability, and economic inequality. Her leadership is expected to drive the AU’s agenda forward, ensuring it remains a strong force for positive change. Her victory not only reflects her personal achievements but also highlights Algeria’s growing influence in shaping Africa’s future.
