Cradle Film Studios Takes a Significant Step Towards Becoming Africa’s Most Advanced High-Tech Film Studio Complex
The project has moved into the financing phase after securing investment from South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).
First announced in 2022 by Known Associates Group, the project is now one step closer to construction.
Joel Chikapa Phiri, Chairman of Known Associates Group, announced at the Cannes Film Festival that groundbreaking is set for January 2026.
Phiri emphasized the studio’s significance, stating:
“Cradle Film Studios represents a bold new era in African film infrastructure, combining world-class technology with a commitment to sustainability, skills development, and cultural preservation.”
A STRATEGIC LOCATION FOR THE STUDIO
The studio complex will be situated adjacent to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It will be located about 50 kilometers from Johannesburg and just 10 minutes away from an international airport.
STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY WILL BE USED
The studio will feature over 40,000 square meters of production space, including 15,000 square meters of high-tech sound stages—among them, Africa’s most advanced virtual and smart stage.
Inspired by the UK’s Pinewood Studios, the project will also include the continent’s first enclosed underwater filming stage.
Additional facilities will include stunt training areas, costume and set design departments, artist support spaces, and dedicated post-production zones.
A KEY FIGURE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT: NICO DEKKER
Heading the project is Nico Dekker, former head of Cape Town Film Studios, who has worked on major productions such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Netflix’s live-action One Piece series.
Dekker outlined their vision, saying:
“Our goal is to make CFS the most advanced, purpose-built film and virtual production studio in Africa. With sustainable development, skilled local talent, and an experienced leadership team, Cradle Film Studios is ready to redefine the future of film production on the continent.”
