African athletes dominated the 50th edition of the Amsterdam Marathon.
In the men’s race, Geofry Toroitich Kipchumba from Kenya claimed victory with a course record of 2:03:30.
The previous record was 2:03:39, held by Ethiopian Tamirat Tola. Kipchumba’s time also ranks as the fourth-fastest marathon of the year.
The 25-year-old Kenyan showcased an impressive performance among top competitors, including Joshua Cheptegei and Gabriel Gaey, once again proving his talent. He also achieved his personal best in the process.
In the women’s race, Ethiopian Aynalem Desta finished first with a time of 2:17:37.
After a close battle with Bertukan Welde, Desta surged ahead in the final stretch to secure victory, surpassing her previous personal best of 2:22:11 by a wide margin.
Her rival Welde also set a personal best of 2:17:56, while third place went to another Ethiopian athlete, Mekides Shimeles.
