As the African Development Bank (AfDB) celebrates its 60th anniversary in Rwanda, its significant contributions to the nation’s progress, particularly in healthcare, stand out. One of its flagship initiatives is the Center of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering and e-Health (CEBE) in Huye District, developed in partnership with the University of Rwanda to address the pressing health workforce needs of East Africa.
CEBE has been instrumental in equipping young professionals with specialized skills in biomedical engineering and e-Health, empowering them to tackle immediate healthcare challenges while laying a foundation for future advancements. This initiative has cultivated a pool of skilled professionals poised to innovate and raise healthcare standards across the region.
One such success story is that of Jackline Gatsinzi Mupenzi, whose journey highlights the transformative impact of AfDB’s investments. Born in 1995, Mupenzi pursued an advanced diploma in prosthetics and orthotics, motivated by a desire to improve the lives of people with disabilities. After her graduation, she joined the University of Rwanda and became a pivotal figure in advancing assistive technologies to enhance mobility and independence for individuals with disabilities.
Her career reached new heights with the establishment of CEBE, which allowed her to advance her qualifications from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree.
“This opportunity went beyond education; it expanded my expertise, sharpened my skills, and strengthened my commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. Thanks to the Bank’s vision, I now have the tools to make a greater impact, improving lives and contributing to community well-being,” Mupenzi shared.
Her story reflects the broader impact of AfDB’s initiatives, which have empowered countless individuals across Africa. Mupenzi describes the Bank’s efforts as a profound investment in Africa’s future, nurturing a generation of leaders equipped to address the continent’s challenges. “To the African Development Bank, thank you for believing in us and equipping us to be changemakers. Your efforts are transforming lives—not just today, but for generations to come,” she added.
As AfDB marks six decades of service, projects like CEBE underscore its commitment to fostering innovation, resilience, and compassion. By investing in human capital and long-term development, the Bank continues to shape a brighter, healthier future for Rwanda and the African continent.
