Last year’s CAF Champions League winners, Al Ahly, put on a goal-scoring spectacle against Algerian side CR Belouizdad at home.
Despite an impressive show of dominance, Al Ahly found themselves trailing in the 21st minute when Aimen Mahious sent the ball into the net from inside the penalty area, making it 1-0 for Belouizdad.
The star of the match, Wessem Abou Ali, stepped up in the final moments of the first half to level the score at 1-1.
However, the second half brought a completely different scenario for Belouizdad. In the 51st minute, Wessem Abou Ali struck again, scoring his and his team’s second goal with a precise shot from the penalty area.
Just five minutes later, Abou Ali’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but Hussein El Shahat capitalized on the rebound to extend the lead. Then, in the 84th minute, Abou Ali fired another shot from outside the penalty area, increasing the score to 4-1.
Veteran South African player Percy Tau joined the action in the 86th minute, pushing the scoreline to 5-1. Al Ahly wasn’t done yet. In the third minute of stoppage time, a quick counter-attack culminated in Emman Ashour scoring, making it 6-1.
With this emphatic victory, Egyptian side Al Ahly sent a strong message to the other teams in the tournament. They surpassed Orlando Pirates to claim the top spot in the group. After three matches, Al Ahly sits at 7 points, while Belouizdad remains at 3 points.
