Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed on Wednesday that it has taken control of two areas in North Darfur as fighting continues with the Sudanese army.
Local sources said RSF fighters, travelling in dozens of armed vehicles, stormed Abu Qamra, located around 200 kilometers northwest of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The town had previously been under the control of the Sudanese army and allied forces.
The RSF also launched an attack on Ambro, about 300 kilometers northwest of El-Fasher, the sources added.
In a statement, the group said its fighters had “tightened control” over both areas, sharing videos on social media that appeared to show RSF forces in the towns.
There has been no immediate reaction from the Sudanese army regarding the claims.
The RSF already controls most of Sudan’s Darfur region except for several northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control. Meanwhile, the army maintains control over much of the rest of Sudan, including parts of the north, east, south, central regions, and the capital Khartoum.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF erupted in April 2023 and has since resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced, fueling one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
